Conference Info

The International Young Scholars Conference is a significant section of the Beijing International Film Festival • The 27th College Student Film Festival. The conference aims to provide academic platform for international young scholars with research interests in film and media studies.

The theme of the 2020 International Young Scholars Conference will be “New Perspectives in Cinema Studies,” which responds to the new developments, new patterns and new phenomena in both fields of film studies and film industry worldwide.Four panels are proposed to cover relevant and significant topics. We encourage young scholars and graduate students worldwide to submit manuscripts addressing exciting and cutting-edged topics around the new trends of cinema studies.

Panel Info

The Return of Chinese Realist Cinema: Expending Genre and the Mainstream Storytelling

Along with the growth of domestic film industry, the rapidly developing Chinese movie production is currently at significant transition. Observable changes and new phenomena appear in terms of the cinematic forms, genre and storytelling. In the recent years, increasing numbers of commercial Chinese movies characterized by both realist characteristics and mainstream representation performed well in the market, and received attention from both the industry and academia. We thus encourage the young scholars to elaborate around the relevant phenomena as well as existing theoretical concepts including “the new mainstream movie” and “the industrial cinematic aesthetics.” We look forward to seeing fresh ideas around new developments of Chinese movie in the past 5-10 years.

New Images in Contemporary Chinese Cinema: Young Auteurs and New Images on Screen

Young auteurs always play crucial roles in the development of regional film production. Firstly, as early adopters of new media and technologies, new generation of filmmakers are challenging traditional film creation and production patterns in many ways. Meanwhile, the popularity of young actors and actresses is in turn reshaping the author-reader relationship in film spectatorship. In the era of media and cultural convergence, we encourage the young scholars to mention younger auteurs, actors/ actresses and their cinematic works, and to theoretically construct or revise the framework of criticism of contemporary Chinese cinema.

Cinema and Media: Technique, Ecology and Spectatorship

Cinema is always a significant part of the transmedia and intertextual production. The rapidly developing digital technologies have brought new questions in the fields of film and media studies: What is the medium of cinema?  What are the textures of cinematic media? How is cinema shaped by its medium? How to interpret the affordance (if any) of cinema? We encourage the young scholars to elaborate around the above questions in terms of (but not limited to) transmedia storytelling, media ecology, media archaeology and spectatorship.

Rethinking the Ontology of Cinema: Subject and Boundary

The evolution of cinematic technologies and new media platforms are challenging the definition of “cinema.” The debates around Netflix and movie theatres continue. Scorsese’s critics of Super Hero movies and cinema also received much attention. Ultimately, these empirical debates lead to a significant theoretical argument, which was inspired earlier by Bazin but worth asking again: “What is cinema?”.  We thus encourage the young scholars to rethink the ontology of cinema, and to bring out new thoughts by reviewing classic frameworks of grant theories, postfilm theories and cinema philosophy. We hope to see fresh ideas around the definition, subject and boundary of contemporary cinema.

Optional Topic

Other than above topics, we also welcome other cutting-edges elaborations around new phenomena and topics of Chinese cinema. Please briefly indicate and introduce your proposal in the application form.
